He took Blues reins from the large man and then watched the big Indian easily vaulted on a painted horse and walk away in the direction of the cabin. He climbed onto his horse’s back, glad Blue was packing him for his own legs felt a little shaky right then, and followed the Medicine woman and her chaperon back into the bush with the second big Indian following along behind him. It didn't take long to reach their destination; the Indians knew a short cut that he did not. As the crow flies, he noted, they were actually pretty close neighbours, less than a mile apart. Why he had not heard them or seen their camp fire smoke before he had no idea. They were so quiet, even their horses didn't make any noise, not like Blue that snapped dead twigs under his feet and snorted or farted as he stepped up. He dropped Blue’s rein on the ground and walked into the cabin first, closely followed by the big Indian and then the Medicine woman. The other Indian had not entered the yard; rather he did an about turn with his horse and quickly rode in the direction of the stage wreck.
The girl was lying in the same position as he had left her. She had not moved a muscle. The cabin was warm but dark and it smelled of blood and whatever else was clinging to her skin. He lit the coal oil lamp and set it on the small table beside the bed. He stepped back out of the way as the Medicine women quickly took over.
