The stage accident was maybe twenty minutes old. He had heard the crashing roar and gun fire from the trail he'd been riding on down below and high tailed it up the mountain for a look see. He wasn't sure quite what he would find, but he wasn't expecting to see all the blood, guts and carnage that awaited him. Bile rose in his throat threatening to overtake him as he took deep breaths before looking back inside the open door of the over turned Stage Coach. One young girl was the only one still breathing, god the only one alive, but who was she? A passenger or hostage he wondered. Her hands were bound so tight with rawhide straps that her fingers were blue. He looked down at her feet and noticed they were in the same condition. He looked over his shoulder and scanned the scene again. Nothing moved except for the hair standing up on the back of his neck as if the ghosts of the dead were breathing down it. He shook off the feeling and moved into action removing broken boards and horse harness parts to get at her. As he lifted the last board off of her small frame, he noticed her shiny gold coloured dress was torn right down the middle, leaving little to the imagination.
