Chapter one Gold can glitter but it cant sing
The day was July 27Th in the year of the Lord 1862.

His mind travelled back to the other recent times he had seen death close up, too much death in too short of a time for anyone to get a good grip on. He had first heard about the gold rush a few years back, when he was still living in San Francisco with his parents. He was young and single and thought he might try his luck panning for the yellow coloured money in the gold capital of New Caledonia. The north was the lure to people of all kinds. From judges to sailors, dance-hall girls to banker, it didn't seem to matter what walk of life they came from, the want for gold and the riches and all that came along with it was a good enough reason for many to give up their lives and go north and he was no different, he had the bug and he had been one of them. New Caledonia was British Territory, north of the 49Th parallel, Canada it was called by many, backwater of the wilderness it was referred to by most others.
