Chapter one – Gold can glitter but it can’t sing
The day was July 27Th in the year of the Lord 1862.
.....
The cabin was quiet except for the sizzling of the deer stew; he doctored the girl again and sat down to eat a bowl full of hot oats with a little fresh cream. The cream was a real treat, something he couldn't resist buying regardless of the high price he paid for it. He was just licking the last of the cream off his spoon, when a blood curdling scream pierced through the air. He went straight up, damn nearly hit his head on the beam above the table and when he came down he was on his knees beside the bed. The girl’s eyes were still shut, but beads of sweat and tears were running down her face. Her arms and legs jerked about under the blankets as if she was fighting someone off and she was screaming like bloody hell. He tried talking to her, then he tried holding her hands, it just seemed to make it worse. He didn't know what to do. “If she keeps this up sweet Jesus she going to start raising the dead” he said as he paced back and forth, trying to think of something to do. “For Christ sake the windows are rattling”. He yelled at her in a final state of desperation. Then the cabin door crashed open and he thought his heart was going to stop or blow up all together.
