Chapter one Gold can glitter but it cant sing
The day was July 27Th in the year of the Lord 1862.
.....
As he made his way over and the Indian rose to his feet and motioned for him to follow him back to the watering hole. What the hell, why not he thought, food what was food? The Indian started pulling bark off the willows at the edge of the small creek. The individual trees were spindly but they grew in vast clumps all along the waters edge. He watched for a few minutes as the Indian used his long knife to strip the thin red bark off revealing an inner white layer, both layers were gathered up into two neat piles set on the clean green grass. Before starting to help the Indian with the task he went to fetch his axe from the wood pile, thinking that it might work better than his buck knife. The Indian stopped working and watched him like a hawk as he used his very sharp axe to split the bark as the Indian had done. When the Indian was satisfied with the job he was doing quietly went back to work alongside him. They didn't talk; come to think of it the big Indian had not said a word of English to him the whole night. Not that he minded the quiet, but a grunt every now and then would have been nice to hear.
