Chapter one – Gold can glitter but it can’t sing
The day was July 27Th in the year of the Lord 1862.
......
He offered a coffee to the big man but he refused so they both just sat there in silence enjoying the warmth of the fire for a few more minutes and then as if by mental telepathy the cabin door opened and the women came walking out. They both watched her walk towards them. Then she quickly took a seat beside her chaperon and said something in her own language. When she turned her head to take a look at him, he tried offering her some coffee too, but she also refused, shaking her head in response. He couldn't wait any longer to eat so he dished out the beans onto three of his tin camp plates and handed each of them one. The chaperon pulled the rabbit from the spit with his bare hands and ripped it into pieces, placing big chunks on each of their three plates. He would have liked to be able to talk to them but he thought better of it and just kept his eyes on his own plate and silently ate the much needed meal. The Rabbit meat did taste wonderful in spite of being a little chewy. After they all set their plates down, the women began to speak in broken English. She said quite simple “Girl sleep. You give medicine.
