Chapter one � Gold can glitter but it can�t sing
The day was July 27Th in the year of the Lord 1862.
.....
The images of that night floated like pictures before his eyes. The decision to hop on Blue and get the hell out of there was made in a split second. He did not want to be seen as the last man standing. He turned the big horse into the bush and they disappeared into the darkness, never to be seen by any of those people again. Travelling alone wasn't so bad, better than taking the rap for some murder he didn't commit.
He had to stop his remembering as his old wood framed line cabin came into view. He rounded the last corner of the brush covered deer trail they were following and made a bee line for the cabin. The sun was setting, casting a fiery red glow over the small porch of his temporary home. His eyes stung from the smell that was still clinging to the unconscious girl�s body in his arms. He turned the old rusty metal latch on the pine plank door with one hand and kicked it open.
