Chapter one – Gold can glitter but it can’t sing
The day was July 27Th in the year of the Lord 1862.
.....
He cleared his throat and replied; “I’ve come to ask the help of your Medicine women, there was a bad stage accident and I brought a hurt girl back to my cabin”. He looked at the Chief’s unchanging face and thought to himself, What the hell was I thinking, coming here after dark, looking for a Medicine women, who belongs to a tribe of white men killing Indians, crazy the Chief called him crazy, Ya; he was feeling crazy that was for sure. After the Chief stared at him for what seem like an eternity, the Chief finally said; “Why you want to help this girl, you do not know her, would it not be easier for you if she were to die”. He looked across the fire into the eyes of the big Chief, thinking; how does he know that I don’t know the girl, but what came out of his mouth was “I found her half dead in an overturned Stage Coach” but he couldn’t explain any farther as the Chief raised his hand to silence him. Then the Chief said “We know where you found her, do you know why she was in that stage” the Chief asked. “No, but I don’t want her to die, she’s only a young girl, I don’t know why she was in that stage or what the hell happened to cause that wreck” he replied with as much gusto as he could muster.
