Chapter one � Gold can glitter but it can�t sing
The day was July 27Th in the year of the Lord 1862.

Some friends came with him as far north as Fort Yale. It took them all two years travelling and working their way up the Oregon Trail along the coast line of America. It was while he was in Fort Yale that he heard gold had been struck in large quantities in the areas around Barkerville. That�s where everyone wanted to be. He thought of going by boat up the river, like others were doing, but the Fraser River was a formidable opponent. When he and his friends had arrived at the Fort, the mighty river was in full spring freshet, flooding was everywhere. It was enough to send many back where they had come from and they were the lucky ones. Others not...
Barbara St. Jean was born in Maple Ridge, BC. At the age of four she was introduced to Belle Morse from the Maple Ridge Merry Makers and her career in the arts was started. Over the next 26 years she studied dance and acting, and performed in hundreds of well known theatre productions throughout the province. Many of her performances have been televised and are still shown today. In 1980 Barbara opened her own dance studio in Mission, BC and shortly after, received her accreditation in choreography. She graduated from university in 1989 with a degree in Business and Economic Management. Her love of the arts continued to grow and expanded into drawing, sculpting and painting in the early 80’s.
