The women got up and motioned for him to follow her into the cabin. The heat and smell set him back. The door was left open and for that he was grateful. He noticed right away that the girl looked better; she had some colour back into her face. The Indian woman stood beside the bed and motioned for him to stand beside her. He was a good six inches taller than her and she smelled of leather and unidentifiable medicinal herbs. Her hair was jet black and worn in two braids tied off at the bottoms with rawhide stripes. For the first time he noticed she had a scare on the side of her face going from her ear right down her neck to the bass of her throat. He could hear the chaperon doing something by the fire outside, but his attention was needed inside. The Medicine women said; “you watch”. Then she held up bundles of herbs and god only knows what else wrapped up in cloth rages and showed him one spot after another, and where and how to apply the medicine soaked bundles. He took the bundles from her and did exactly as she had done. Once the women was satisfied he understood her instructions she clearly stated the words “Girl sleep, you put medicine, I come tomorrow.” Then the women covered the girl back up as the chaperon came walking into the cabin carrying the rest of the pot of beans with the de-boned rabbit mixed in. It was set on the warming hook over flame in the fireplace and the women said; “girl wake up, you feed”. When he nodded his understanding, the Indians turned on their heels, walked out the open door, hopped on their waiting horses and quickly disappeared into the night.
