Chapter one Gold can glitter but it cant sing
The day was July 27Th in the year of the Lord 1862.

Some friends came with him as far north as Fort Yale. It took them all two years travelling and working their way up the Oregon Trail along the coast line of America. It was while he was in Fort Yale that he heard gold had been struck in large quantities in the areas around Barkerville. Thats where everyone wanted to be. He thought of going by boat up the river, like others were doing, but the Fraser River was a formidable opponent. When he and his friends had arrived at the Fort, the mighty river was in full spring freshet, flooding was everywhere. It was enough to send many back where they had come from and they were the lucky ones. Others not so lucky were seen floating down the raging river after their bodies were ripped to pieces in the ferocious currents. The mighty Fraser River had her stories, but after pulling a whole dead family out of the cold frigid water he had decided to not be one of them. All that was left was a crying widow, one scared to death daughter, a broken down horse and all their newly gotten gear that could be salvaged. Thats when he made the decision. Over land was a safer option instead of risking it all on one hellish boat trip.
